Fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) use compressed hydrogen as an energy-carrier, converting into an electrical current by way of a fuel cell stack. The fuel cells operate via an electrochemical reaction using hydrogen and oxygen to create an electrical current to drive an electric motor drive train. The fuel cell stack producing the electrical current is highly efficient compared to a traditional combustion engine and is classified as ultra-low emission vehicle (ULEV) producing zero emissions with water vapour and heat being the only by-product.
Hydrogen FCEV`s have fewer moving parts than traditional combustion engine vehicles with no engine noise and lower service costs. Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles have many advantages over Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV) with the fuel cell stacks having a long life expectancy ( up to 200.000 miles - 10 years) compared to batteries (up to 50.000 miles - 5 years) are much lighter, due to not having large heavy battery packs, and can travel up to 400 miles on a fill-up time of around 4 minutes, compared to battery vehicles up to 200 miles and charge times up to 8 hours. Hydrogen vehicles do not lose charge when left for a period of time or in the cold and do not have recycling issues, as battery vehicle owners are discovering.
